Appearance: Around average height at 5'10'' with thick, shoulder length, sandy brown hair that he wears tied back, though his hairline is starting to recede, a trait inherited from his father. His face is slightly long with a long, straight nose light brown eyes below dark brows. There is usually a few days worth of hair growth across his chin, which is reddish in colour. Although quite slim in his youth he is now starting to put on weight, although he is not excessively large. He walks with a slight limp on his right leg due to a particularly nasty kick when he was younger; this troubles him particularly in cold and damp weather. His hands are rough from work and his nails short due to his bad habit of chewing them subconsciously.
Clothing: Simple shirt and breeches in earthy colours.
Personality: He is quite shy as he doesn't want people to get too close to him and discover his secret. He has enough experience of people he thought were friends turning against him when they found out so it is not surprising. Generally he would only tell people as much about his past as he thought they needed to know, which may be part of the reason people don't understand him. He would have to be very close to someone before he even considered telling them any more than that. However if he does manage to make friends he is extremely loyal, standing up for those he believes to be right. He carries slight resentment in his heart for his father not understanding him when he was younger but as he feels that no one has ever really understood him this is not great. He has been friends with thieves previously, liking them for who they were, though not approving they're way of life, though he does understand that some are given a harder path to walk in life than others. He would prefer it if they could find a way to survive that didn't hurt others but generally keeps these opinions to himself.
He greatly loves horses, after all they've never let him down when he thought they were his friend, and knows a great deal about them. He is always eager to share this knowledge, which others may find annoying. Though he would be the first to admit that he is by no means the best in this field he does try and has spent many hours learning about their natures so he can understand them better.
When he has been drinking he is likely to become stressed, and this is much more likely to cause him to have a seizure. Due to this he tries to avoid alcohol, though this is not always possible as he finds it hard to refuse if people are very persuasive.
He mostly worships the great mother goddess, and will sometimes sit outside at night, just to gaze at the moon. He worships other gods too, but she is his main one. He knows this is unusual, but she is the Mother of mountains and mares, and both have special meaning to him.
Strengths: He is able to tell when people have been looking at him for an extended period of time. This sometimes allows him to tell if he is being followed. This is not due to magic he was taught this ability by some thieves he knew at his previous town. He has a wast knowledge of horses, mostly through his personal experience, he has worked hard to try to understand their natures. He is also immensely loyal, and will stand up for the rights of his friends.
Weaknesses: He is mildly epileptic. This is usually in the form of balls of light occurring across the left side of his vision. Very occasionally he has a full seizure where he looses consciousness for a short period of time, though this only occurs after the previous symptoms. Although this is not common, he has learnt that it only occurs after he sees light and therefore tries to avoid others at this time. The affects still scare him though as he doesn't understand them. This makes him shy around other people, as he doesn't want them to get too close to him and then leave when they find out. He also has a tendency to be annoying when talking about horses for great lengths.
History: His history is not remarkable, he grew up in Northern Tortall where his parents and brother still live. Although his mother died giving birth to him his father remarried a few years later and his regards Elinor as his mother as she is the only one he has ever known. He also regards her brother, William, as his uncle. As William's wife, Margaret, was unable to have children he is especially fond of Thomas and Matthew and made them several toys when they were younger. Margaret copes with her being barren by her job, by helping other women look after their children. Although she is very sad she'll never have any of her own she understands that this is what the Gods wish of her and she won't be able to change that. When Matthew was old enough William took him to be his apprentice and he and Margaret treated him like their own son.
Thomas discovered his epilepsy at a young age but was too scared to tell anyone about it as he had not heard of anyone else with problems like this, and did not want people to think he was mad. Around this time he also developed his love of horses, he used to watch his dad at work, playing with the wooden ones William had made him in an empty stall. He started work as a stable boy under his father at age eight, and progressed well. When he was ten he had his first seizure. He was working with a reasonably bad tempered horse when he collapsed behind its hooves and was severely kicked. Luckily no one witnessed this and he allowed his father to believe he had merely been careless. As a result his father was slightly pleased when he discover that his leg would not fully heal as he thought it would serve as a reminder to his son to be more careful in future. When he got older he found work as a hostler at the local inn. Here he made friends with local thieves, who taught him about their ways. Although he never approved of their way of life he respected them immensely for their loyalty to each other. As the war broke out in Scanra he saw many nobles and soldiers riding North to help defend the border. This gave him the great experience in handling all manner of horses, including a few large war horses. Although he knew that their presence was due to the war, and he hoped that the fighting wouldn't come too far south, he felt immensely proud to be placed in charge of such magnificent beasts. During that time he had a few more seizures but became better at predicting them and they passed without incident. That was until his most recent one. Although he was able to predict it he was unable to escape to private. This seizure was witnessed and it cost him his job as no one knew what was happening, or if he was dangerous. Around the time war was declared he also became friendly with one of the serving girls in the inn where he worked. She was a pretty thing though seemed to prefer his company over that of the other men who frequented the place. As he came to know her Thomas wondered idly what it would be like to kiss her. Seizing his opportunity a week later he kissed her gently and she returned it with passion. They courted for a while, taking things slowly. Eventually he gathered enough courage to tell her about his condition. Though she was true to her word and never told anyone else about it their relationship suffered greatly. By the time his witnessed seizure came they were hardly talking. He left soon afterwards and headed to Corus, where he hopes to find work away from people who will have heard about his condition and the secret hope of finding others like himself.
